Ioannis Giotopoulos is Associate Professor of Empirical Industrial Organization and Innovation at the Department of Economics, University of the Peloponnese. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Patras, an MSc in International and European Economic Studies from the Athens University of Economics and Business, and a BA in Economics from the University of Patras. He served as Assistant Professor at the University of the Peloponnese from July 2014 to October 2022. Prior to joining academia as a faculty member, he was a Research Fellow at the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research (IOBE) (2012–2014), where he contributed to research projects on entrepreneurship, strategy, and innovation. During 2012–2013, he was also a Visiting Researcher at the Bank of Greece, conducting research on financial constraints and the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises. Earlier, he held teaching appointments at the University of the Peloponnese, the University of Central Greece, and the Technological Educational Institute of Patras.

His research lies at the intersection of innovation economics & management, entrepreneurship, digital capabilities, industry dynamics, firm performance, and business strategy. His work has been published in high-quality international journals, including Research Policy, Small Business Economics, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Technology Transfer, Journal of Small Business Management, Review of Industrial Organization, European Management Review, International Journal of the Entrepreneurial Behavior & Research, Economics of Innovation and New Technology, Economic Modelling, Journal of Industry, Competition and Trade, Bulletin of Economic Research, International Journal of the Economics of Business, International Entrepreneurship and Management Journal  among others. He serves as a referee for numerous international peer-reviewed journals in the fields of innovation, entrepreneurship, economics and management.

His teaching experience covers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in innovation economics and management, economics of business strategy, international trade, introductory economics, human resource management, business economics, public sector strategic planning, risk management, environmental economics, applied econometrics, and European regional integration.. He has supervised numerous Master's dissertations and two doctoral theses.

He has held several academic and administrative positions at the University of the Peloponnese, including Departmental Coordinator and Institutional Coordinator for Student Internships. He has also served as the School's representative on the Council of the Centre for Lifelong Learning (KEDIVIM). Since 2017–2018 (and continuously since 2020), he has been a member of the Hellenic Open University's adjunct teaching staff (SEP), teaching the module Entrepreneurship and Innovation Theory.

He has been a member of the Greek national team of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) since 2013 and is affiliated with the DRUID Academy, the European Association for Evolutionary Political Economy (EAEPE). He has also served as evaluator for the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI), the General Secretariat for Research and Innovation (GSRI), and innovation and entrepreneurship programmes.

His research interests focus on Economics of Innovation and Innovation Management; Digital Capabilities; Entrepreneurship and Business Strategy; Industry Dynamics and Firm Performance.
