Mission statement of the department

The Department of Economics of the University of Peloponnese aims at excellence in knowledge.

ΤThe members of the teaching and research staff, together with the administrative staff, and with the assistance of its undergraduate and postgraduate students, with the assistance of its doctoral and post-doctoral candidates and its alumni, plans and implements the course of the department based on the maximum possible contribution to excellence, teaching and research, and rewards it in any way it can, morally and materially.

The basis for achieving excellence is cooperation among all, investment in new knowledge and new technologies, monitoring social needs and responding to them (where and how the Department and its resources can respond), systematic efforts to connect with the labour market and its needs, systematic promotion of the international presence of the members of the Department, continuous search for improvement of working conditions, reduction of bureaucracy wherever possible, speed of decision making, and the use of the best available resources.

Mode of operation

  1. Free thinking and strengthening of self-activity and initiative.
  2. Provision of quality student services (library, electronic access to University services, study areas).
  3. Counselling services and academic advisor for the student.
  4. Promotion of graduates in the labour market through internships and cooperation with professional and social institutions.
  5. Recording the professional development of graduates and making use of their opinions and suggestions.
  6. Protection of the working environment and upgrading of administrative staff.

Objectives and planning

  1. Top quality research, through:
  2. Ensuring access to databases (Thompson/Reuters) and literature to all members of the Department and potentially the academic community.
  3. Increasing the number of peer-reviewed publications per faculty member to at least 1 publication 3* per year. Reward faculty members, doctoral candidates and post-doctoral fellows who publish in journals 4*. Key criteria for recognition are the ABS and ABDC lists, with emphasis on the first of the two, but also any other peer-reviewed lists appearing in leading, recognized, peer-reviewed journals, their reviews and extensions.
  4. Teamwork and systematic effort to attract new research projects in different fields of Economic Science in order to promote interdisciplinary, inter-institutional and European collaborations of the Department.
  5. A PhD of international standards, i.e. through peer-reviewed research, through mandatory publication in peer-reviewed journals, presentation at international academic conferences and mandatory examination in core economics courses.
  6. Participation of undergraduate and postgraduate students in the research of faculty members of the Department.
  7. Provide a high level of specialization in Economics and general education so that students acquire comprehensive and global knowledge.
  8. To promote learning outcomes with a modern orientation and continuous renewal of the curriculum and teaching methods.
  9. Systematic organisation, evaluation and updating of the Study Guide, as a starting point for the overall development of the Curriculum, in order to remain compatible with the educational and professional needs of students.
  10. Dissemination of the knowledge provided through lectures and open access programmes.
  11. Postgraduate Programmes for contemporary educational and labour market needs, through:
  12. The creation of MSc's with foreign universities and the use of tele-education.
  13. Exploring cooperation with international bodies (e.g. GARP, CFA and others) that offer both professional certification and recognition for the Department
  14. Enhancing the profile of the Department with more visitors for lectures and seminars, organisation of conferences and lifelong learning programmes.
  15. To intervene in the conduct of national economic policy, through the publication of proposals concerning the effectiveness of the proposed economic policies and their compatibility with modern economic science.
  16. Social participation and social intervention, to improve the quality of life and enhance economic literacy in society.
  17. Recognition of the importance of analysing big data and the information they transmit, linking them to new technologies.
  18. Continuous renewal of the Department's communication methods (website design, blog, communication with alumni).
  19. Increase the Department's human resources by 25% over the next three years.

Secure

The Department attempts to ensure the above through the operation of committees such as:

- The Study Guide Committee which has the role of planning and reviewing the course content and identifying possible overlaps or gaps. It also ascertains whether the Programme is in line with the corresponding European curricula, where it proceeds to reformulate the ECTS credits and confirms the correspondence between the students' workload and the corresponding ECTS credits.

- The Doctoral Studies Committee, whose role is to review the application files of new doctoral students, to organise semi-annual research seminars aimed at developing the skills of doctoral candidates, as well as semi-annual presentations to evaluate their progress.

- The OMEA whose role is to prepare internal evaluation reports of the department with necessary information to ensure quality assurance in the undergraduate curriculum and in the functioning of the department. These reports are available to the institutions of the Department and to the M.I.P. of the Institution.

In addition to the above committees, the Department intends to immediately establish the following committees:

- Strategic Planning Committee, which will have the role of preparing, in collaboration with the other committees, the Department's strategy for the coming years by describing and evaluating the current situation, defining the Department's vision and goals, and implementing them through the business plan.

Research Project Evaluation Committee whose role will be to recommend the department's research planning and research needs, and to record the participation of undergraduate and postgraduate students, doctoral candidates, postdoctoral fellows and academic scholars in the department's research projects. It will also recommend to the strategic planning committee, the research design of the department to be taken into account in the business plan.
